Ricky Roberts, 18, and Jay Yeatman, 17, appeared before North Avon Magistrates Court on Friday 16 March. They were issued with interim ASBOs on 3 January for threatening and endangering their local community in a series of incidents and attacks.
Sector Inspector Angus Krouwel of Avon and Somerset Police said: “In the months before we gained the interim ASBOs the level of anti-social behaviour reached unprecedented levels for South Gloucestershire.
“We were receiving several calls every day from the public and local shop keepers. A group of youths between six and 12 in number were gathering outside the shops, abusing members of the public, intimidating local businesses and causing damage to property.
“Since the interim ASBOs were granted, nuisance levels have been significantly reduced. We still get some calls to the area, but not on a daily basis, and local people have effectively been able to enjoy their community again. This shows that, used selectively and in a balanced way, ASBOs can work.”
Under the full ASBOs, Roberts and Yeatman are prohibited from:
- Having contact with, in public, whether being in a group with, or otherwise associating with each other in South Gloucestershire
- Entering or attempting to enter the area of School Road, Cadbury Heath, or Newton Road, Cadbury Heath between The Lamb Public House and 2 Queens Road, Cadbury Heath
- Contacting four named individuals, whether directly or indirectly
- Acting or encouraging others to act in an anti-social manner that causes or is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to one or more persons not of the same households as themselves
Roberts is also prohibited from being in possession of alcohol in open bottles, cans, cups or containers in a public place, except when upon licensed premises.
Philippa Isbell from Safer South Gloucestershire’s anti social behaviour team said: “People in Cadbury Heath were being stopped from using and enjoying their local facilities as a result of the anti social behaviour caused by Roberts and Yeatman, which in turn has had a negative effect on the livelihood of local traders.
“Since the interim ASBOs have been in place, there has been a marked reduction in complaints and Cadbury Heath has been given back its community and peace of mind. I would like to thank the Cadbury Heath residents and housing office, who have worked with us and the Police to secure these ASBOs.
“We will continue to use the powers available to us to protect all South Gloucestershire communities from behaviour that causes harassment, alarm or distress to others.”
If Yeatman or Roberts breach their ASBOs, they will be liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment, a fine or both. Please contact the Police in confidence on 0845 456 7000 to report any incidents or problems.
