As well as a variety of demonstrations, exhibitions and stalls, a parade has been organised to go through Staple Hill, along Broad Street.
The whole event begins at 1.30pm with a Darth Vader lookalike performing the opening, along with the Chairman of the council, Cllr Jim Cullimore, and it is likely to finish around 5.00pm with carol singing in the Square.
Also taking part in the parade will be a Town Crier, two bands, pipers, Morris Dancers, Father Christmas in his carriage, a motor cycle club, community groups and a fire engine.
Cllr Shirley Potts, executive member for communities, said: "This festival was first organised in 1977 to bring the people of Staple Hill together and to raise money for charity. The festival has grown year on year and this year’s event promises to be the best."
Also set up during the day will be a stall giving people the opportunity to find out more about Safer South Gloucestershire, whose work includes dealing with community safety, anti-social behaviour, domestic violence and working with young people. The exhibition will take place at the Bath Street garage on the corner of Broad Street.
The police, police community support officers and Neighbourhood Watch will also be represented and will offer young people the chance to have their mobile phones property marked. Avon Fire & Rescue will also be there with an interactive children’s game where they can spot fire safety hazards.
At the Sanctuary there will be a children's programme, where the Chairman of the council will judge the fancy dress competition and Father Christmas will make a return visit.
The Methodist Church will be hosting a charity fayre and grotto, and there will be Victorian fun at the British Legion. In the Square, there will be Morris Dancing, a shoot out involving the Outlaws and the Panama Jazz Band will also be playing.
There are a host of other activities on the street and lucky programmes will be on sale earlier in the day. The winning tickets will then be displayed in shop windows during the afternoon.
