Tackling Crime in South Gloucestershire

Recorded crime in South Gloucestershire is lower per 1000 population than the average rate for Avon and Somerset Police area and England & Wales. The area is generally a safe place to live and work in, and Safer South Gloucestershire works as a Partnership to ensure this continues.

South Gloucestershire achieved an overall detection rate for recorded crime of 24.2% in 2005/6 (above the target of 20%). View Avon and Somerset Constabulary South Gloucestershire District statistics.

To report a crime, call the Police on 999 (emergencies) or 0845 456 7000 (non-emergency), Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online

Projects and Initiatives to Tackle Crime in South Gloucestershire:

The Handy Van scheme was launched in July 2005, to offer a free home security service and advice to residents and properties at risk of burglary (including victims of domestic violence or hate crime). Properties are visited and target hardened (i.e. to make it less likely they will be targeted).  None of the premises to date has been a victim of burglary since they were secured by the Handy Van carpenter

The Bobby Van scheme helps secure properties that have already been targeted by burglars, hate crime and perpetrators of domestic violence.

40 memo cam digital cameras are in use in sheltered housing schemes to detect and prevent burglary offences.  Sheltered housing schemes are visited and given crime prevention advice.  Victims in sheltered schemes fell by almost 41% in 2005/6

Seminars on Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) are held and attended by district and town council, development control, local planning and neighbourhood watch representatives.

Since 2002, over 50 small businesses have benefited from grants of up to £1000 through the Safer Shops scheme to install or upgrade security systems on their premises.

The Police hold Business Crime Breakfasts at trading estates and business parks. The repeat victimisation rate for commercial crime has steadily fallen (from 38% in 2004/5 to 32% in 2005/6).  Business crime overall has reduced by 32% since 2002/3

Safer South Gloucestershire supported the Police’s burglary reduction campaign ‘Windows of Opportunity’ which involved the distribution of 10,000 postcards urging people to take simple steps to avoid becoming victims, especially during hot weather when they leave windows or doors open

There are 267 Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Schemes active at present covering approximately 32,000 households across South Gloucestershire. The Partnership is constantly striving to set up new schemes in areas that are suffering with crime and are not covered by Neighbourhood Watch. NHW not only helps to decrease crime in an area but also rebuilds community spirit and reduces the fear of crime.  Contact the South Gloucestershire Police Neighbourhood Watch Administrator on 0117 9312503
