Drug awareness days - 19 June 2008

Representatives from Safer South Gloucestershire will be at Bradley Stoke Leisure Centre on Tuesday 24 and Wednesday 25 June to raise awareness about drugs and provide information on treatment services.

People who live and work in the district are being encouraged to visit the stand between 10.30am and 2.30pm to find out more and get advice from the experts.

The events follow on from the success of National Tackling Drugs Week, held in May. Staff from Safer South Gloucestershire surveyed more than 140 people who visited their stands at leisure centres across the region and the information gathered will be used to help shape services in the district.

A short questionnaire was circulated to find out public perception of drug use and whether people knew about drug treatment services in South Gloucestershire, and where to go to get information, support and advice.

Of the 143 people completing the survey, 59 per cent thought there was a problem with drug use in their local area, while 34 per cent did not and seven per cent were unsure.

A sample of some of the anonymous views given on the questionnaire said:

● Most people including parents are unaware of the extent and ready availability of drugs until someone they know has a problem
● I think that users should give talks to schools about the reality of losing family, friends, jobs and the nitty gritty, reality of drugs
● Any action to help the youngsters is very welcome
● I live in a very isolated area and do not come across drug problems
● Drugs can be kept under control if you consider changing your circle of peers
● I think there should be more bobbies on the beat
● Excellent stall for awareness, thank you
● I think this is great to bring drugs awareness direct to the community because all the time it seems ‘out there’ it’s scary

Matt Wills, treatment coordinator for Safer South Gloucestershire, said: “In line with the Government’s new national drug strategy and its focus on protecting families and communities from the harmful effects of drugs, we want to make sure that everyone can access information and advice on drug awareness and treatment in South Gloucestershire, quickly and easily.
“Furthermore, by looking at residents’ views on drug use in their neighbourhoods, we can plan outreach work in the most appropriate communities.”

The drug awareness day is being held in the same week as the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26th, which is supported by the Home Office through Misuse and Addictions Week (June 23-30).
