South Gloucestershire Drug and Alcohol Action Team Conference
The first South Gloucestershire Drug and Alcohol Action Team conference was held on 9th June 2010 at Eastwood Park Conference Centre. The conference was chaired and organised by Sarah Telford, Drug and Alcohol Treatment Co-ordinator and the keynote speaker was Andy Ross, Chair of the Service User Voice group for South Gloucestershire Drug and Alcohol Services (SGDAS) who delivered a presentation on ‘A Service Users experience of South Gloucestershire’s Drug and Alcohol Service’.
The aim of the conference was to highlight a range of the pioneering work being carried out by SGDAS and to be an enjoyable and memorable conference for all. There were six workshops running throughout the day, the majority of which were delivered in partnership with an external agency.
The titles included:
‘Why bother with Benzo’s?’ by Una Corbett, Battle Against Tranquilisers.
‘Responding to overdose and the Naloxone project’ by Andre Traile and Ed Holder, Drugs and Homeless Initiative and Kathryne Clements, The British Red Cross.
‘Harm reduction in primary care’ by Chris Hutchison, Drugs and Homeless Initiative.
‘Why work with families?’ by Esther Harris, Families Also Matter and Paul Volker, Young Peoples Drug and Alcohol Service.
‘Progressing dual diagnosis in South Gloucestershire’ by Sarah Telford, South Gloucestershire Drug and Alcohol Action Team and Richard Edwards, Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership (NHS) Trust.
‘Establishing an Integrated Offender Management Unit in South Gloucestershire’ by Olwen Kelly, South Gloucestershire Drug and Alcohol Action Team and Chris Eade, South Gloucestershire Criminal Justice Intervention Team.
The delegates found the range of workshops incredibly useful in developing an understanding of our current work. In addition to workshops there was a choir performance by representatives from Drugs and Homeless Initiative and a poetry performance by Steve Duncan and Malusie Banda.
The conference was attended by over one hundred and twenty participants, which included Service Users, Carers, family members, frontline practitioners and Senior Managers. Their feedback was extremely positive. Participants’ comments included “this was the best conference I have ever attended”, “the workshops were really interesting and varied”, “the music and poetry were brilliant” and “can’t wait til next years conference”.
Due to the overwhelming success of our first Drug and Alcohol Action Conference, we are certainly aiming to hold a second conference next year (dates to be confirmed).
