South Gloucestershire Drug & Alcohol Services

Detox

If you’re thinking about detox, talk it through with your GP, who can refer you for this service, or you can talk to your SGDAS worker about it.

Detox is available in South Gloucestershire in two ways:

In-patient detox

Some people need to detox on an in-patient basis.  This means going into a specialist unit for a period of time (usually two weeks) to undergo a detox programme tailored to your needs.

Your worker can make a referral for this service on your behalf.  This will involve an assessment by Bristol Specialist Drug and Alcohol Service (BSDAS) who will then help you to prepare for your detox.

Before you are admitted for detox, your worker will help you to think about your plans for when you finish your detox.  This is called an ‘aftercare’ plan.

Community Detox

You may be part of the Shared Care scheme, which means that your GP is prescribing methodone or another opiate substitute, in conjunction with SGDAS support.

You may choose, with the help of your GP and SGDAS worker, to start reducing your substitute prescription to work towards becoming prescription and drug free.  The length of this reduction/detox programme will differ depending on individual choice and needs.  If this is something that you are thinking about, talk to your SGDAS worker or GP.

Even if you are not on a substitute prescription, but would like to detox in the community, your SGDAS worker can support you through this.
