Goodie bags used to help reduce disorder- 22 July 2008

Flip flops, lollipops and panic alarms are to be handed out in goodie bags in Kingswood and Chipping Sodbury this weekend, to help spread safety messages to late-night revellers.

The scheme is called ‘RESPECT – be safe, sociable and self-aware,’ and is funded by Safer South Gloucestershire. The aim of the event is to get messages across around safer drinking, safe taxis, domestic violence, drug and alcohol treatment services and safe sex.

Bags will be handed out to people of all ages who are out enjoying a night at the pub or clubs in these two areas on Friday 25 July.

There is a cotton shopper version for women and a grey plastic backpack for men, each contain the following items:

For her
A bottle of water to reduce dehydration
A lollipop to increase blood sugar levels
A panic alarm
A condom to promote safe sex
A pair of flip flops to replace high heels at the end of the night
Information leaflets on domestic violence, safe alcohol intake and beer mats promoting safe drinking.

For him
Condom, leaflets and lollipops but the flip flops and panic alarm will be swapped for a beanie hat to maintain body heat.

A team of volunteers from Safer South Gloucestershire, trading standards and licensing and the youth service will be handing out the goodie bags.

Ian Bowen, violent crime coordinator at Safer South Gloucestershire, said: “The bags are being used in a practical and fun way to get these important messages across on having a good time, but being safe, sociable and aware.

“Other similar initiatives elsewhere in the UK have been highly effective in achieving the joint aims of preventing the kind of disorder associated with the evening and night-time economy through the provision of information and diversionary activity.

“We hope that by providing a visible partnership presence in areas affected by violent crime, anti-social behaviour and disorder there will be a reduction in the fear of crime and increased public confidence and reassurance.”

Acting Chief Inspector Simon Ellis said: “South Gloucestershire is a great place to socialise and we are pleased to support this imaginative initiative aimed at keeping everyone even safer on their nights out.

“Everyone should show respect to themselves and others – know your limits when drinking and make sure you know how you’re getting home.”
