Drugs & Alcohol Awareness Training

We run six drug related courses in South Gloucestershire, all of which share the following very broad aims:

  • To raise participants' awareness of drugs, alcohol and drug & alcohol related issues.
  • To make participants aware of the system where-by they can access help and support in relation to a substance issue.
  • To help reduce the harm caused by the misuse of drugs and alcohol

Drugs & Alcohol Awareness Training Course

Content will include:

  • Challenging myths & attitudes surrounding drug and alcohol use
  • Increasing knowledge, understanding & awareness
  • Identifying signs, symptoms & paraphernalia
  • Patterns of use
  • Identifying treatment services available
Drugs, Alcohol and Child Protection

Content will include:

  • Exploring & challenging myths & attitudes that surround drug & alcohol use
  • Increasing knowledge, understanding & awareness of substances, their names, uses, effects & dangers
  • Identifying signs, symptoms and paraphernalia of drug use
  • Considering strategies for engaging with & assisting children where there are, or may be, issues of misuse
  • Considering strategies for communicating with both children and parents/carers in a sensitive manner in relation to substance misuse
Handling Sharps & Drug Paraphernalia

Content will include:

  • Identifying signs and paraphernalia of drug use
  • Increasing knowledge, understanding & awareness of substances, uses, effects & dangers
  • Exploring methods of handling needles, sharps & drug paraphernalia in the safest manner possible
Working with Drug Overdose

Content will include:

  • Exploring & challenging myths & attitudes that surround drug overdose
  • Understanding the causes of drug overdose and exploring statistics in relation to overdose
  • Identifying methods of preventing overdose
  • Understanding appropriate ways of responding to overdose
  • What to do
  • What not to do
Drugs and Young People

Content will include:

  • The effects and risks of substances
  • Drug taking behaviour
  • Strategies for encouraging and supporting young people
Working with young drug users to promote behavioural change

Content will include:

  • Emotional Literacy
  • Motivational Interviewing
  • Attribution and Self-belief

 

The sessions will will take the form of whole group learning interspersed with a number of small group activities.

An attendance certificate mapped to DANOS (Drug and Alcohol National Occupational Standards) can be made available at the end of the session.
