Statistics for South Gloucestershire show that during an average three months, more than 560 incidents of domestic violence were reported to the police. Of these, more than 470 reports were from women and over 90 were from men.
Charlotte Badlan, domestic and sexual violence coordinator for Safer South Gloucestershire, said: “We are working tirelessly in South Gloucestershire to help all people suffering at the hands of someone who is supposed to care for them, be it their partner or a family member.
“This is the first full year of delivering our strategy ‘Domestic Violence: Everyone’s Business’, which over 30 organisations have pledged their commitment to. The strategy highlights the actions South Gloucestershire will take to support people experiencing domestic abuse.
“Our message to anyone experiencing domestic violence is that you are not alone and you do not deserve to live in fear. If this Valentine’s Day you find you are scared of your partner then please seek help.”
Key to tackling domestic violence in the district is the Multi Agency Risk Assessment Conferences (MARAC), introduced in May 2006. They are designed to put support in place to protect people at high risk of harm from domestic violence, and reduce their likelihood of experiencing repeated violence.
Between January and December 2007, of the 98 cases heard by the MARAC, 70 per cent have not reported any further violence. Of the 30 per cent who did, the majority reported a low risk incident involving no physical violence.
Charlotte added: “This is a phenomenal reduction considering the long history of abuse suffered. It shows how effective these conferences are in reducing risk of serious harm for people experiencing domestic violence.”
