Yate Week of Action - 16 August 2007

A series of activities will be taking place later this month to make life better for residents who live and work in Yate.

Police and officers from Safer South Gloucestershire and Avon Fire and Rescue will be working with other partners on a week of action to crack down on crime and increase public reassurance through high visibility patrols and interaction with the local community.

The Home Office initiative runs from Monday 20 August to Friday 24 August. Residents living in the Abbotswood area have already been sent questionnaires asking for their views on community safety issues.

Other events planned for the week include:

■ An unwanted vehicle amnesty takes place all week. Any registered owner can book free collection with the Street Care team by calling 01454 868000.
■ Officers from various agencies take part in a walkabout around Abbotswood shops on Monday, followed by a street briefing at 5pm to find out residents’ views
■ Play rangers will be at Tyndall Park just off Cranleigh Court Road on Tuesday and Thursday between 2pm to 6pm, working with younger children aged six and under.
■ Environmental Action Day on Wednesday 22 led by the council’s Street Care team
■ Kingswood Bus Project will have information for young people on circus skills, arts and sports in the overflow car park at Yate shopping centre
■ Information pods will be situated in the shopping centre with representatives from the police, Safer South Gloucestershire, Avon Fire and Rescue, Merlin Housing Society and the crime reduction team.

Members of staff from the council’s parking enforcement team will also be involved in the event as they play a wider role in helping to keep South Gloucestershire a safer and cleaner place to live by reporting incidents of anti-social behaviour and graffiti.

Andy Hichens, senior community safety officer for Safer South Gloucestershire, said: “Yate action week demonstrates the depth and breadth of work we do in partnership with the police and other agencies to tackle criminal damage and anti-social behaviour. The week of activities will help us to raise awareness of these issues, deal effectively with perpetrators and build a safer and stronger neighbourhood that those who live and work in Yate can be proud of.”

Police Sergeant Andrew McIlrath added: “This is yet another example of how a partnership of the police, Safer South Gloucestershire and the community can pull together to make a real difference to our neighbourhood. We hope as many people as possible will come along to the street briefing - it's your chance to make sure that we're tackling the problems you want to see resolved during this week of action."
